Yesterday I didn’t feel good. I didn’t want to type it because I didn’t want it to be true. It is true, though. Allergies have attacked and it’s not good. I’m allergic to mold/mildew and the damp, cool weather isn’t helping. My chest and throat felt tight and everything was strained, leaving me tired!
I contemplated going to the gym, but I knew that my body did not need to be dragged through a mediocre workout. Instead, I stayed home and took it easy. I ran the store after work and picked up dinner there. Dave’s Market sells hot, fresh brick oven pizza. I always grab samples while shopping, but I never actually buy it. Last night seemed like the perfect night for a purchase.
I selected the multigrain special of the day. Can you believe this was only half of the “slice?” The multigrain crust was topped with cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, artichokes, and fresh basil. There may have been something else on there because each bite had a bit of a kick to it…but who knows!
I really wanted some veggies, so I made a big salad to go with my pizza.
Lots of vegetable goodness!
Since I had time on my hands, I decided to get down and dirty with some bar making! I know how ridiculous it is to buy so many bars for snacks and I’ve been wanting to make my own for awhile. I read about Katherine’s bars last week and they looked great, so I followed her lead and turned to Smitten Kitchen for their granola bar recipe.
I followed their recipe to a T! The only variation was my choice of dried fruit. I used what I had on hand – chopped figs, chopped, dates, raisins, and cranberries. The recipe was easy to follow and the bars are delicious!
After tasting, I portioned my batch of bars into single servings and bagged them up for easy on-the-go snackage.

It’s a new day and I’m trying to ignore the allergy symptoms, but they persist. I really, really, really want to run after work…just a short run, nothing crazy! I just don’t know if it will happen. It’s hard to run when it’s hard to breathe. We’ll see…
Luckily, I had a pick-me-up breakfast this morning – OIAJ!
In my jar:
- 1/3 c. old-fashioned oats
- 1/3 c. skim milk
- 1/3 c. water
- 1/2 banana, sliced
- 1 T. ground flax
- peanut butter
- granola bar crumbs
Breakfast makes me happy
. While digging my spoon into this oatmeal mess, I didn’t stop once to think about these nagging allergies. OK, maybe once, but the thought was fleeting!
It’s Thursday and we’re over the hump. Yay!
Do you have allergies? How do you deal? It’s hard to rest when the symptoms are allergy-related because I don’t really feel “sick.” I’m trying to listen to my body.
