The Fall Decision

June 24, 2011

I’m all about summer right now.  I’m super excited about what the next few months will bring because I know they will be great.  I also know those months will fly by and the next season will creep in.

Fall.  Fall marathon.  Marine Corps Marathon.

I’m registered.  I signed up on a whim while I was training for the National Marathon.  The running/blogging community gets pretty wild over big races.  There’s Twitter madness and emails galore.

Almost full.

Only a few spots left.

Eek!

I jumped the gun.  I registered.

28 hours later, registration closed and I had a coveted spot at the starting line.

And it’s a spot I no longer want.  After much thought, I made the decision to defer my registration for the Marine Corps Marathon.  This means, I will not run a fall marathon, but I have the option to run the race in 2012.

There’s no particular reason for not running this race.  I’m not hurt or incapable of training.  I just don’t want to and that’s a perfectly good reason for me.

Running makes me a runner.  Marathons do not.  I know what it takes to train for a marathon and if I attempted to train for this race, it would be a half-hearted attempt. It could result in injury, exhaustion, and a miserable 26.2 mile trudge through our nation’s capitol.

To say I am excited would be an understatement.  Deferring my marathon registration took a weight off my shoulders.  Running brings me great joy and I would hate for it to weigh me down.  I love it too much.

I couldn’t be happier!  I have some really great events on the calendar:

It’s going to be an {ontherun} summer!

Marathon Madness: The Road to 26.2..again!

After the Amica Marathon in October, I spent days (maybe weeks!) riding that marathon high.  I completed a race that felt bigger than me and it took a long time for the joy to fade.

I got wrapped up in the excitement and starting doing crazy things…like registering for another marathon!  Before the end of October, I was officially registered to run the full marathon in Washington, DC on March 26, 2011. (Two days!)

I successfully completed an 18-week training cycle for Newport and had no qualms about doing it again.  Training for the National Marathon began in December, right around the time the snow began to fall.

The streets were covered with feet (yes, feet!) of snow and ice and I wondered if this race would happen.  I thought about throwing in the towel, but I really wanted to run this race, so I stuck to the only option available at the time.  I took it to the treadmill for the bulk of my training.  I had no idea how it would impact my running, but I wasn’t ready to give in to Mother Nature.  My desire to complete the training cycle grew stronger.

I was crazed and determined.  Many treadmill miles later, the snow began to melt and the {ontherun} adventures began.  I relied heavily on my running friends to get me through the long, intense runs.

They kept me running strong,

and embraced my marathon madness.

In just a few hours, Lauren and I will board a flight to Reagan National Airport.  (Best wishes to lucky passengers sitting near us!) I have a suitcase full of running gear and trail mix, an iPod full of peppy music, and a body full of carbs.  I completed my final three mile run this morning.  DC, watch out!  Here I come!

I have a bajillion thoughts swirling through my head.  Slowly but surely they will become coherent sentences and I will share them with you.  Stay tuned for a post about the things I plan to do differently the second time around.

If you will be in DC this weekend, good luck!  I hope to see you there.
