Eat and Run

I started today with applesauce.  Kelly recommended it for some pre-run fuel.  Kelly is a rockstar runner, so I went with it!

My morning run was a refreshing three miles.  I thought about doing four, but my legs said three would be best.  When legs talk, I listen!

Total Distance: 3.0 miles

Total Time: 26:09

Average Pace: 8:42/mi

I ran three consecutive days this week.  A lot of training plans schedule runs this way, but I don’t think it suits me best.  During half-marathon training, I ran 4x/wk.  I never ran more than two days back-to-back.  I just don’t feel as strong on the third day.  In designing my marathon training plan, I’m sticking with the same concept.  This body has only been running for less than a year, so I don’t want to burn it out!

Post-run breakfast was a delicious oatcake.

In the mix:

  • 1/3 c. quick oats
  • 1/3 c. liquid egg whites
  • 1/2 banana, mashed
  • 1 T. ground flaxseed
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

Smeared with a bit of almond butter for pancake perfection!  This ‘cake was particularly cake-y and fluffier than usual.  I don’t know why, but it worked!

I made it through Thursday without much fuss.  I had some afternoon fun to look forward to…a facial at a great new salon.  It was a fabulously relaxing and informative experience.  I will share all the details in a separate post.  Pamper time – yay!

Since I didn’t go home after work, I broke into some packed snacks.

Me being me, I tore into the Luna bar right away.  The veggies were a nice thought and made it into the photo, but never into my mouth.  Ah well!  I made sure to eat my veggies at dinner…and a very random dinner it was!

I was hungry and this is what I wanted to eat – grilled asparagus, grilled corn on the cob, hummus, and blue corn chips.  I brushed my veggies with olive oil, sea salt and pepper and put the on the grill for a little char.  Grilled vegetables are my latest obsession.  If it can be grilled, it will be grilled!  I needed some protein so I added the hummus to my plate…and how could I scoop the hummus without chips? Love me some blue corn!

It’s a beautiful night and those puggle eyes are saying, “Walk me!” I must go.

What’s your favorite way to eat veggies? I’d take grilled or roasted any day.

Five At Five

Meet mini Luna bar.

She has powered me through many a morning run.  We were good friends for a long time…but all good things come to an end.  I believe our relationship ended today.

I woke up super early and readied myself for five miles.  My gear was all laid out, including my friend, Luna.  I chomped the little bar down and went on my way.  I’ve done this many times before and it’s worked every time.  Not today!  Luna did not go down easy.  My legs and breathing were spot on, but that bar just sat at the edge of my stomach looking for a way out.  I kept it down and made it through the run, but I’m pretty disappointed in the fuel failure!  Time to try something different – 1/2 banana, perhaps?

Regardless, I’m proud of the run.  My morning runs are usually four miles or less, but I pushed it to five miles this morning.  I woke up a few minutes earlier and had plenty of time to run and stretch.

Total Distance: 5.01 miles

Total Time: 44:05

Average Pace: 8:48/mi

When I got home, I was greeted by this:

I added a little of this:

And I sat down to enjoy this:

The oats were a great comfort.  I kept it simple and only added flax and banana…and the scrapings of PB in the jar, of course. My stomach still feels a little off.  The heat could be creating some dehydration, so I’m chugging water.  Hopefully my body will settle as the day goes on.

The marathon training plan is coming soon….be ready!

What do you eat before a morning workout? I don’t think an empty stomach will work for me…but I need some better options.
