Run and Recap

My Saturday started just like any other.

Guess what came next?  Did you say running? Ding, ding, ding!!!  We have a winner!  I went for a random run yesterday.  I’ve been doing a lot of these lately and having so much fun.  I go out without a plan and just explore – twisting and turning wherever my heart desires.  I feel like I’m running with a smile on these little jaunts.

Total Distance: 7.39 miles

Total Time: 1:06:01

Average Pace: 8:56/mi

It was a fun run!  I started out strong but I slowed down in the last three miles.  It was HOT!  I think I will be waking up early, even on weekends, in the coming months.  I had no problem running in the frigid temps of February, but heat and humidity is a whole different ballgame.  My mantra of the day: HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE!

I started that process with the greenest Green Monster.

  • loads of spinach
  • 1 c. almond milk
  • 1/2 frozen banana + a few other random chunks of frozen fruit
  • 1/3 c. plain Greek yogurt

I’m not the greatest smoothie maker, but this baby came out perfect!  The flavor, the consistency, the color – everything was spot on!  I chugged sipped, recovered, and enjoyed!

Saturday’s activities included a ladies BBQ at my aunt’s house.  It was just the Paige ladies.  We always have a blast talk, talk, talkin’ away!  People joke that we all talk at the same time and never know what the others say…it’s a great way to get along!  Fun family times.

My aunt had the most lovely fruit spread out when we arrived.

That tray didn’t stand a chance against us.  I had many a chunks of cold, juicy watermelon throughout the afternoon.

In honor of Memorial Day, we lunched on the obligatory cookout foods.  I made myself a plate of the good stuff.

My lunch consisted of:

  • a naked turkey dog - completely craving this!  Sooo good!
  • pasta salad
  • more fruit
  • a few sour cream and onion chips – hands down, my favorite flavor!

It was a beautiful day to lounge on my aunt’s deck.  I staked claim to the chaise early and spent most of the afternoon there.  Glorious!

I rounded out the day with a lovely dinner out – photo-free – and some prep work for today’s BIG project!  Wait ’til you see what I’m up to!

I may need to do a little grilling of my own at some point, too.  Cookouts are a must on holiday weekends!

What is your favorite “cookout” food? I love picking at the fruit salad all summer long.

Through The Storm

Literally!

At least I can laugh now!  I woke up this morning yearning for a long run.  I love starting the weekend off with a liberating, rhythmic run.  I had my heart set on eight miles…seemed like a good number for the week after a race!

I fueled up as usual – peanut butter and banana sandwich on yoga bread – eaten in bed!

As I enjoyed my breakfast, I watched the weather report.  It rained through the early hours of the morning, but things looked pretty clear from my window.  The radar looked promising, too.  I’m in the clear! Around 8 am, I set out for eight relaxing miles.

I decided on an “out and back” course.  It felt great to be pounding the pavement in the quiet of the morning.  The skies were gray, but nothing looming, so I ran on.  Just as I turned at the halfway point, I heard it…the familiar rumbling of thunder in the distance.  I thought maybe I’d have time to get home before the rains came…WRONG!

For the last 2.75 miles of the run, I ran through torrential rain with the lovely sound of thunder to keep me company.  I had my cell phone if I needed to call for a ride, but once I got soaked, I decided to keep right on truckin.  Yuck!

I cut the run a little short and made it home in 7.75 miles with an average pace of 8:39/mile. I kept the pace through the entire run, but I really worked for the last mile.  Now I understand the importance of lightweight running shoes.  My water-logged shoes were heavy! It was a challenge to get my feet off the ground.

As I walked in the door, I hear the familiar voice of our local meteorologist reporting, “It seems the course of the rain has changed.” Riiight.

I immediately stretched, iced, and warmed up with a  shower.  Of course, refueling was not far behind.

Today was a Green Monster kind of day!

  • fistfuls of spinach
  • 1 c. skim milk
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1 T. ground flaxseed
  • 1/2 T. cocoa powder
  • ice

Exactly what I needed!

Just an update: I made it to dinner last night!  We went to dinner around 8 pm and I was hungry, but not famished.  Good job, hot apples!  There are no photos from dinner because the restaurant was dimly lit and very busy.  I wasn’t about to make a scene with flashes, etc.  I know you understand :)

We ate at Fresco’s Italian Restaurant.  Great food, great service, fun atmosphere!  I ordered a “create your own” pasta dish.  It was pretty simple – spaghetti with marinara and sauteed vegetables.  I also had a side salad.  I was impressed at how easily I was able to customize the dish.  The waitress allowed me to choose the veggies I wanted and my dinner was made to order.  Everything came out perfectly!  Fresco’s was a little off the beaten path, but I could tell that it’s popular in the area and plan to go back.  It’s always nice to discover a new and delicious locally owned restaurant!

Time to begin my day!  I have a typical Saturday planned – farmer’s market, errands, dinner date – let’s get it started!
