Adrenaline Day

July 23, 2010

Whoa!  It’s been quite a day…and it’s only 12:30! This day is shaping up to be filled with craziness and fun!  In 5.5 hours, I will be standing at the starting line of The Blessing of the Fleet.  I will say, I am an early bird. I’ve been patiently waiting chomping at the bit to get this show on the road!

With pre-race jitters running through my veins, it’s been hard to enjoy a low-key morning.  I’ve been trying to keep things as ordinary as possible.

7:00 am – Oatmeal time!

I made a pretty powerful bowl of oats.  I decided that front-loading my day would give me the best fuel for a night race without leaving me with a heavy meal sitting in my belly at the start.  This bowl included:

  • 1/2 c. old fashioned oats
  • 1/2 c. water
  • 1/2 c. almond milk
  • 1/2 banana, cooked into the mix
  • 1 T. ground flaxseed
  • Toppings: 1/2 sliced banana, 2 chopped strawberries, 1 T. almond butter

I twiddled my thumbs, read blogs, and watched Katie, Matt, Al, and Anne until I couldn’t take it anymore.

9:00 am – Let’s bake!

As I browsed through my Google Reader, I stumbled upon Emily’s post for Three-Grain Chewy Energy Bars.  What better race day activity?  I got to work whipping up a batch of my own.

I followed Emily’s recipe with a few changes based on the ingredients I had in the pantry. I didn’t have millet.

Beck’s Two-Grain Chewy Energy Bars

  • 3/4 c. steel-cut oats
  • 3/4 c. quinoa
  • 2 bananas, peeled and sliced
  • 1/4 c. honey
  • 2 T. cocoa powder
  • 2 T. ground coffee
  • 1/2 tsp. pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 4 c. water
  • 2 T. coconut oil

Check out Emily’s post for the cooking instructions.  She did a great job of describing the steps!

These dense, chewy bars are cooling as I type.

A bit of batter may have found it’s way into my mouth…oops!  Now I know I’m in for a real treat.  Can’t wait to bite into one of these babies.  Only a couple more hours until I do!

11:30 – Green Power!

Salad just doesn’t make the cut on race day, but that doesn’t mean I can’t have my veggies.  Hello, Green Monster!  A perfect blend of nutrition and hydration…and deliciousness! This smoothie contained:

After this smoothie, I was feeling pretty charged up.  Ready to go.

Then the day took an unexpected turn…what’s better than a race?

Gah!  I just bought a ticket to The Healthy Living Summit.  You can’t imagine how excited I am.  On Monday, I had my very first opportunity to hang with lovely bloggers.  In just a few weeks, I will be meeting so many of you!  I’m so looking forward to the experience!

The rain just started pouring down…but it’s not raining on my parade! It’s race time!  As my mom always says, “When you play in the rain, everyone can tell who the witches are.  They melt.” I’m not a witch!

My Yoga Mission Continues

I don’t set my alarm on Sundays.  It’s the only day of the week that I just sleep.  I allow my body to get whatever it needs.  Last night I got to bed at a reasonable time and enjoyed a solid eight hours of snoozing.  No thunderstorms to wake me up!  Heaven.

I woke up, drank a cup of coffee, fiddled on the computer, and thought about breakfast.  I decided on a classic.

A hot bowl of whipped banana oatmeal with dried cranberries, dark chocolate chips and a scoop of smooth, creamy peanut butter.  It was easy…easy like Sunday morning.

When I finished my bowl, I realized that I would have plenty of time to go to a 9 am yoga class.  I had two options.

  • Raffa Yoga.  This is my hot power yoga studio of choice.  I love whole vibe of the place and learn a little more at every class.  Raffa Yoga is about 40 minutes away from home and not so convenient.  I want to go there all the time, but it’s just not always feasible.
  • Siddhani Yoga Studio. This small yoga studio opened up about 10 minutes from home.  It’s not a hot yoga studio, but they do offer hatha and vinyasa classes seven days/week.  A couple of people told me about the studio and someone even gave me their business card.

My choice: Siddhani Yoga Studio.

I decided to give another studio a shot.  Since I really want to incorporate more yoga into my regimen – especially during marathon training – I knew I would have to find a more convenient option.  It seemed the perfect time to try something new.  I went online and saw that the studio had a “Community Vinyasa Class”  at 9, so I drove over.

The website made it clear that the community class would only accept 20 people, so I arrived at the studio around 8:40.  Admittedly early, I wanted to make sure I got a spot.  When I got there, the place was locked up tight, not a soul in sight.  I decided to sit in my car and wait a few minutes.  Before long, a car pulled up next to mine and a woman got out, yoga mat in hand.  I unrolled my window and asked about the class.  She introduced herself as the instructor and led me into the studio.

The studio was clean, bright, and freshly renovated.  It was simple and serene with a calm feel.  Minutes later, ladies came streaming in.  There were probably 10 of us total.  The instructor asked me to fill out some forms and then gave me the greatest news of all….Sunday morning class is FREE!

With quiet music playing in the background, class began.  It was 75 minutes of basic vinyasa flow.  I felt comfortable with all of the poses and challenged myself when I needed to.  Many of the participants were new to yoga and seemed to be enjoying their first experiences.  Because there were some new yogis, the flow was a little interrupted, but I didn’t mind - it was free!

I think I may be on to something.  My marathon training plan has most long runs scheduled for Saturdays.  I can’t think of a better way to follow up a long run than with free yoga! I will probably pay for a few classes at some point during the week, so I can get a feel for different instructors, but for now, I am so excited about this find!  If you are in the northern RI/ southeast MA area, email me or check it out.

I got home from yoga around 10:30, sweaty and ready for a little snack.  Green Monster time!

OK.  It’s not the greenest Green Monster, but it was pretty darn tasty!

  • lots of baby spinach
  • 1 c. almond milk
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • 1/3 c. frozen blueberries

Refreshing!

I’m all showered up.  Lots to do today!  I have to get a ton of end-of-the-year schoolwork out of the way before DC.  Ready to tackle the to-do list.

Any great deals/finds lately? Free yoga is a good one, if you ask me!
