The Jar Collection

October 6, 2010

I have quite the buildup of empty nut butter jars.

If it’s any consolation, there are more empty jars than full in this house.  I am determined to stop purchasing every fancy nut butter that I see.  I am limiting myself to my top-rated peanut butter, Teddie, and the PB & Co. jars that I find at Ocean State Job Lot for $3.  Every once in awhile, I’ll treat myself to Justin’s, but I’m trying to be reasonable.

Anyway, the collection has grown…and I’m all about the empty jar. This morning, I poured a hearty batch of oats into my favorite one.

Basic oats, basic peanut butter – not-so-basic breakfast! The Teddie jars are the best because they’re glass.  I love that.  I can use them over and over again.  Note: Teachers are hoarders of all things recyclable.  I think it’s in the job description. This breakfast hit the spot after a six mile run.  I ventured out into the dark, cold, rainy morning, so I could run at the gym.  I needed warm oats upon my return.

But I didn’t stop there.  I still had two empty jars.  They were sitting on the counter tonight.  It’s chilly and hot, cinnamon apples seemed like a tasty dessert…in a jar! I chopped the apples, sprinkled them with spices, added a few raisins and popped them in the microwave.

FAIL.  Barney Butter jars are not microwave safe.  Sometimes I learn my lessons the hard way.  I almost poured the apples into a bowl, but the melted plastic scared me off.  That can’t be good.

Luckily, I had a Plan B.

I said I was decreasing the nut butter collection.  That does not include Peanut Butter Pie Frozen Yogurt.  Yum!

Vanilla ice cream, peanut butter cups, graham cracker crust.  Heaven in a bowl!  It’s the simple things…

Like a marathon t-shirt.  Just a peek! When this arrived with today’s mail, I immediately put in on and squealed with delight.  The race is sooo close.  I’ll keep eating my peanut butter and frozen yogurt,  preparing for the big day.

What’s your favorite way to eat nut butter? The whole in a jar concept seems limited to the blog world.  I’m down with it, but a classic PB&J is still my favorite!

I missed you yesterday!  I had a busy day with the family.  I woke up early – when don’t I? - to squeeze in a run.  I had six miles on my mind and wanted to get them all in before the predicted storms hit.  My cousin got up with me and we took it to the streets.

Total Distance: 6.0 miles

  • Mile 1 – 8:47/mi
  • Mile 2 – 8:37/mi
  • Mile 3 – 8:42/mi
  • Mile 4 – 8:41/mi
  • Mile 5 – 8:37/mi
  • Mile 6 – 8:57/mi

Total Time: 52:26

Average Pace: 8:44/mile

We ran a course of rolling hills.  Those slow, gradual inclines are a killer!  It was a solid training run and I was so glad to fit it in.  Ominous clouds loomed over us the entire time, but the drops waited until the run was done.  Perfect timing!

What’s a beach family to do in the rain?  Explore!

A heavy haze hung in the sky and we had some random scattered showers, but we made the best of it!  We walked around Newport, shopping and seeing the sights.

I walked along the very streets of the marathon route.  October 17th is fast approaching!  As I walked, I thought about that day and all it means to me.  Very soon, those streets will take on a whole new meaning.  I can’t wait!

We also visited Galilee in Narragansett, RI and watched the fishing boats and ferries roll in after a day’s work.

We had a full day of wandering.  We didn’t have a purpose, but we saw plenty of RI’s finer points.  In one day, you can see so many parts of our small state.  With nowhere to be, it was a relaxing and enjoyable time.  We rounded out the day with a sweet treat.

This was probably the most decadent cup of frozen yogurt I’ve ever eaten.  Mud Pie was a winning combination of homemade coffee frozen yogurt, crushed oreos, and a fudge swirl.  To. Die. For! Homemade treats stand out among the rest.  Anytime I see a “homemade” sign, I know I’m in for something special.

The best part of the day came after the sun went down.

Bananagrams! This game has been around awhile, but it was my first time playing.  I love games!  It was quick, easy…and I cleaned house!

Not that I was gloating.  That would be rude.  I just know that I am never going to be the rotten banana! If you have never played this game, you must.

What’s your favorite family game? I love any type of trivia game and most board games, but I’m not much of a card player.
