…because it’s more than just a race.
Bright and early Saturday morning, the {ontherun} girls set out to experience Boston, marathon madness in full effect.
We had grand plans for Boston 2011. Since neither of us could run the race, we sent off our volunteer applications in January and anxiously awaited our assignments. We prepared to be the best water stop girls Boston had ever seen. And then the letter came: REJECTED. Boston had too many volunteers and simply would not need our helping hands. It was a sad day, but we picked ourselves up, dusted ourselves off, and went on because there are so many ways to experience the Boston Marathon without ever running a step!
1. Wake up at the crack of dawn to meet your running idol.
When you’re not running the race, you’re free to skimp on sleep in an effort to fit in extra excitement. At 8:30 Saturday morning, I found my place in the crowded Niketown store to listen to Kara Goucher speak. She is incredibly motivating and inspirational. She talked briefly about her training for the upcoming race and willingly signed autographs for her adoring fans.
2. Spend endless hours at the marathon expo.
There’s no need to rush to get off your feet. Not running just means you have more time to peruse the booths. There’s always more samples to eat and gear to buy.
And when the vendors say, “Good luck on Monday,” it’s perfectly acceptable to smile and nod. The secret’s safe with me.
3. Walk around the city to meet ‘n greet with the amazing runners that came to town for the race.
Lizzy and Kimmy hosted a fun, fabulous blogger event at Cambridge, 1. for all of the runners and their superfans. The room was filled with awesome.
The people,
The food,
The prizes,
And goodie bags for everyone!
These girls know how to throw a party!
4. Sample cupcakes in every flavor.
In the days leading up to be a big race, I always have to watch what I eat…but not when I’m spectating! Kim made these mini delights in peanut butter cup and cookie dough. I had no idea she was such a baker! I tasted both and loved ‘em equally. There will be another party soon – a cupcake party.
I’m back in Rhode Island today to prepare for the big race. See you at Mile 20! Until then…let the madness continue.
Have you ever been a part of the Boston Marathon mania?
