The Big Apple

I think I might be getting the hang of this taper business.  I am enjoying a quintessential fall Sunday in New England.  I started with an exceptionally tasty breakfast.

The apples are just too good to ignore.  I topped a simple batch of stovetop oats with hot, sweet, cinnamon apples.  They gave the usual banana a run for it’s money!  I love the sweetness of warm, cooked fruit.

It was the perfect way to begin an apple-filled day!  Today, I made the annual trip to The Big Apple.

This local farm is an attraction for everyone – children, family, puppies!

It’s sprawling with acres of apple trees, corn fields, and fresh vegetable gardens.  There were plenty of bright orange pumpkins setting the scene.

I’m not quite ready to carve a pumpkin, but bring on the apples!

Yes, please!  I love watching all the behind-the-scenes action on the farm.

The apple grader sorts the apples as the come off the orchard, while the bakers work to perfect their warm donuts.

As a kid, I always got a warm donut and a candy apple from The Big Apple. I broke tradition today, but that’s OK!  Kettle corn was calling me.

Fresh kettle corn was perfect for munching as I walked through the farm.  I loved watching the families, the little faces lighting up as they selected perfect pumpkins and ate homemade ice cream.

Happy Sunday!

What is your favorite fall activity? Fall is one of my favorite times of year, especially in New England.  I love the colored leaves, the apple picking, and the hot cider.  It’s a great time to be outside!

A Fall Farmer’s Market

Plans changed again!  After posting about this weekend’s long run, one of my favorite runners came to the rescue.  Lauren offered to run with me on Sunday.  I never turn down a long run buddy, so I pushed my run to tomorrow.  I’m looking forward to our Sunday morning gabfest!

A Sunday means…a lazy Saturday!  You betcha I took advantage of the day off.  I decided to sleep in and move slowly.  I also had the opportunity to visit one of the best local farmer’s markets.

It was a warm day in Rhode Island, but fall was in the air – pumpkins, apples, and so colorful pots of mums.

I loved the selection from Wishing Stone Farm in Little Compton, RI.

Wishing Stone Farm is certified organic.  They grow such a variety of fruits and veggies, while also offering free-range eggs and local honey (my favorite running fuel).

I learned about their CSA program.  I would really love to invest in a share next year.  They would definitely be a consideration.

There was quite a crowd at the market today.  The beautiful weather brought so many folks out to enjoy fresh food, live music, and sunshine.

As I listened to the music, I couldn’t resist the lure of a tart Mac.

I have no problem with the apple a day rule!  I’ve been chomping of my fair share of the crisp, juicy fall fruit.  I love Honeycrisps, Macouns, and Empires, but a good Mac really is apple perfection sometimes.  What a great mid-day snack!

I am really loving this lazy day.  I’m also getting excited for tomorrow’s run.  Get ready for photos – I bought some fancy new shorts!

Things will be pretty low key tonight…and I like it like that.

How did you spend your Saturday?
