Friends, Family, and Food

Hello again!  I hope everyone had a fabulous Friday.  I sure did!  Late yesterday morning, I did something that I’ve been meaning to do for far too long.  I called an old friend.  She lives only a few miles away, yet we hadn’t seen or talked to each other in months.  When I let things like that go for too long, it becomes harder for me to simply pick up the phone and call.  I feel awkward for some reason.  I decided I couldn’t let that stop me.  I needed to reconnect with an old friend!

I called and she answered.  Conversation flowed as if we’d seen each just yesterday…but of course we had tons to catch up on!  My friend happened to have the day off and suggested lunch.  Divine intervention?! Whatever it was, it worked out perfectly!

We headed to my favorite lunch spot, Trattoria Express for a delicious afternoon meal and lots of chatter.  As soon as I walked into the deli, the thick, doughy slices of Sicilian pizza caught my eye.

I had to have a slice!  Thin, crispy crust is nice, but sometimes you just need something you can sink your teeth into.  That’s exactly what I did.  It was perfectly cooked and delicious, but it was a monster!  I ate half of this slice and saved the rest for later.  I also had a salad with some tangy balsamic vinaigrette.

The food was good, but it was even better to spend quality time with an old friend.  It can be hard to stay in touch when our day-to-day lives become busy, but I need to make it a priority.  Friendships are meant to be cherished.  Take the time to reconnect with and old friend.

By late afternoon, I seemed to be on a roll.  Good things happening all day!  I decided to keep it going with a fancy afternoon snack.

Fancy may not be the best adjective…but you know what I mean!  I had high expectations for this bar.  Want to know what I thought?  Honestly? I like Larabars.  I enjoy most flavors and I like the dense, chewy texture.  I liked this bar, too.  Simple ingredients, good flavor.  I’m in!  But cookie dough? C’mon.  I will never mistake a chocolate chip cookie dough Larabar for real cookie dough.  It was a sweet Larabar with chocolate chips.  If you like these bars, you’ll like this flavor.  If you want cookie dough, whip up a batch of Nestle’s favorites.

By the time dinner rolled around, I could feel tiredness creeping into my body.  I was hungry, but needed sleep.  I joined the family for dinner at Willow Brook – the location of my birthday dinner.  I love the home-y atmosphere and comforting menu options.  I opted for something simple – baked haddock and a baked potato.

Dinner also came with a nice side of seasonal summer squash.

I ate every last bit of my meal.  I loved it.  There was nothing fancy about this meal, but it was exactly what I wanted.  That…and my bed!

After dinner, I curled up with my pup and called it a night.  A premiere of  Say Yes To The Dress – Atlanta was all the excitement I could handle!  Now that’s some Friday fun.  Haha!  All kidding aside, it was a lovely day.

Is there anyone in your life that you would like to reconnect with? There’s no better time than now.  The feeling is probably mutual.

What A Difference A Day Makes

Yesterday, three miles knocked my socks off.  Today, I pushed through fourteen solid miles.  Running is funny like that.  Every run is new and different.  As I told you, yesterday’s snafu turned into today’s motivation….and motivation it was!

I woke up before the alarm, ready for a challenge!  First, breakfast.

I toasted two slices of cinnamon raisin Ezekiel bread and topped each with almond butter and banana.  A toast stack, if you will. Of course, I had a cuppa Joe to go along with my breakfast, which was tasty.  Ezekiel bread is OK, but I definitely need to restock the Yoga Bread.  My heart belongs to Yoga Bread.

During breakfast, I received a couple of motivational texts and tweets.  Thanks for the encouragement.  I needed it and it worked!  I bound out the door, slightly nervous, but excited at the same time.  I had everything I needed - Honey Stinger chews, Sports Beans, a Camelbak filled with a mix of coconut water and H20.  Ready, set, GO!

Total Distance: 14.0 miles

  • Mile 1 – 9:06/mi
  • Mile 2 – 8:56/mi
  • Mile 3 – 9:17/mi
  • Mile 4 – 9:25/mi – Two Honey Stinger chews…tasty and easy to digest!
  • Mile 5 – 9:19/mi
  • Mile 6 – 9:43/mi
  • Mile 7 – 9:33/mi – Three more Honey Stingers.
  • Mile 8 – 10:00/mi- Um….will this hill ever end?  I might die!
  • Mile 9 – 9:26/mi – Ahhh….that’s better!
  • Mile 10 – 9:19/mi – Three Sport Beans…chomp!  chomp!
  • Mile 11 – 9:43/mi – Quite possibly the most boring road I’ve ever been on.
  • Mile 12 – 9:19/mi – Back on home turf!
  • Mile 13 – 9:41/mi
  • Mile 14 – 9:52/mi – The happy dance!!

Total Time: 2:12:43

Average Pace: 9:28/mi

My run ended at a CVS.  I promptly walked in to buy a cold bottle of water.

I think my appearance scared the customers.  They kindly let me cut the line.  Haha!  Maybe my sweaty self didn’t belong in a public establishment, but I needed water! I made a joke, we all laughed, all was right with the world!

This run felt like a true victory.  It wasn’t easy, but the challenge was good.  It wasn’t painful or pitiful.  I am basking in the glow of a fourteen mile morning.

My post-run routine went a little like this:

Stretch, ice bath, eat!  I’ve got a hot date with my foam roller, too.  Considering I just finished the longest run of my life, I feel pretty good – some minor tightness, but that’s about it.  I feel like I made the right decision yesterday.  Had I pushed my body into exhaustion or dehydration, this run may not have happened….and this run was really important to me.

The moral of the story is….train smarter, not harder. Lesson learned!
