Groceries

Grocery Day

Sunday started with thoughts of yoga.  I thought and I thought.  My thoughts went from downward dog to sleeping dog.

I just can’t peel myself away from that pup on a cold Sunday morning.  Plus, we needed the extra sleep.  In between bouts of sleep, I rose for some breakfast.

It’s been awhile since I shared my lovely oats with you because…well…they’re oats!  The bowl never looks particularly exciting, but it always tastes so perfect.  The mix doesn’t vary too much:

  • 1/2 c. oats
  • 1/2 c. almond milk
  • 1/2 c. water
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1/2 tsp. chia seeds
  • cinnamon
  • Toppings: raisins and peanut butter

I let Lucy lick the bowl.  It’s her favorite breakfast, too.

After breakfast, I committed to another marathon.

Say Yes to the Dress. Thank you, Randy, for keeping me entertained through a lazy Sunday morning. This marathon was just what I needed.

I did manage to get dressed and get out of the house, but only because I was in search of food.  Running took over my life for a little while and the cupboards started looking bare.  I typically shop on Sunday – along with the rest of the world – and I could wait no more.  I dragged my mom along for the ride.  We went to two grocery stores.

The first for lunch:

I may not buy my groceries at Whole Foods, but that doesn’t stop me from frequenting the hot bar.  Today’s selection was a cup of hot and hearty minestrone.  I also had a craving for something cold and creamy, so I paired my soup with a Wild Blueberry Flax Parfait.  Yum and yum!

Once fed, we crossed the street to buy our goods.

Market Basket seriously has the best prices around.  They can’t be beat.  I’m willing to fight the crowds for that kind of savings.  I filled my cart with the usual suspects.

And a few impulse buys!

Someone needs their chocolate fix…

There are people who need football on Sunday.  I need puppies and chocolate.  What can I say?

Are you a list-maker or an impulse buyer? I LOVE grocery shopping, so I have to be very careful not to buy everything I want.  I have a list of basic items to keep on hand…then I wing it!

Get Fresh in RI

It’s a glorious day!  The sky a beautiful blue, the clouds puffy and white, and cool, dry late summer breezes rustle through the trees.  I am sitting on the deck and enjoying every fabulous moment.  Afternoons like this are meant to be savored.  Luckily, tomorrow is Labor Day, giving me an extra day to relax without errands and activities.

Every Sunday, I go grocery shopping.  Today, I decided to skip it.  Instead of battling the weekend crowds at Market Basket, I decided to check out some local options.

Sporting my new shirt – “I Got Fresh in RI.”

My mom spotted this shirt and picked it up for me.  She knows me too well – thanks, Mom! I love supporting the local growers!  Many local farms had booths setup at a nearby farmer’s market this afternoon.  I went to scope things out.  I was really excited about the abundance of produce.  Often times our markets sell many specialty foods, but lack local fruits and vegetables.  Not today!

I stocked up.  All local, all organic:

  • pears
  • apples
  • peaches
  • sweet bell peppers
  • cucumbers
  • spaghetti squash
  • eggplant
  • and a sweet jar of bumbleberry jam (made with strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries)

Just picked!

Not only do I love the flavor of locally grown produce, I love meeting the farmers who put their blood, sweat, and tears into each and every plant.  You can tell that the food is grown with love.  It makes a difference!  They are more than happy to let buyers sample new and interesting options.  Fall is a great time for farmer’s markets in New England.  I am looking forward to many more trips!

I am also looking forward to an afternoon nap.  Time to join the puppies!

Do you have a farmer’s market nearby?

What is your favorite fall activity?
