Improv in the Kitchen

I love drama.  I love theater.  For years, I wanted to be an actress.  I thought it was only a matter of time before the scouts spotted me, singing loudly on my middle school stage.  I knew they would scoop me up and bring me to Broadway.  I just knew it.

(Yes.  I was Peter Pan in the middle school play.  Just be glad you don’t actually have to hear that tune.)

Alas, they still haven’t found me.  They’re coming…one of these days…

While I wait for the moment when my name goes up in lights, I use my kitchen as my stage.  Maybe it’s a little off-Broadway, but it works.  I’m not a chef.  I’m not a baker.  I am an everyday cook.  Each day, I create.  It’s mostly improv and that’s what makes it fun!

Today, I came home from work with plans – not dinner plans – workout plans.  I wanted to go to Pilates.  The class was 4:30-5:30.  That’s my cooking time, but I went to class anyway.  When I got home, I was greeted by hungry people.  “What are you making?”

Umm….hmmm….good question!  What am I making?

I had some veggies.

Green peppers, red peppers, snow peas, onions, summer squash!  I chopped up a little of everything.  I like colors!

I had some sauce, too.

And garlic!  I add garlic to just about anything.

With that, I was ready.  I heated up some sesame oil and threw everything into the pot.

A couple pieces of chicken added protein to the recipe.  I let the stove work it’s magic and within minutes, a star meal was born! It was colorful and flavorful.

I served the stir fry over a bed of brown rice (Minute rice, to be exact) and we were ready to eat.  The meal was delicious and filling.  Encore!

Meals like this one are my favorite during the busy work week.  When I first started eating healthier meals, I always reached for recipes and needed new ingredients.  It was often labor-intensive and expensive.  I love a good recipe when I have the time, but lately there’s rarely a recipe.  In fact, each time I make a stir fry, it turns out a little different, but I use healthy ingredients and have fun with it.

Do you have fun in the kitchen?  Do you follow recipes or create your own? Blogs (and bloggers) are my favorite sources for new meal ideas!

A Celebratory Meal

My post-marathon body is feeling quite refreshed.  The past few days have included time in the hot bath, warm bed, and cozy kitchen.  Rest sure does a body good!

You know what else does a body good? Amazing food!  On Monday night, I was surrounded.

Bar Americain.

This was not just a dinner.  This was an experience.  Why does Bar Americain excite me so?

Bobby Flay, the Iron Chef, is the master behind this American brassiere.  This man can throwdown!  When my brother suggested a celebratory dinner at his restaurant, I did not refuse.

On Monday evening, I joined my brother and his girlfriend for the dinner. We drove out to Mohegan Sun, Bobby’s nearest location.  It was worth the drive!  Upon our arrival, the hostess sat our group in a comfortable, spacious booth.  And the menu arrived…

I’ll take one of each! Okay, that’s going overboard.  But seriously, everything sounded delicious.  As I perused the menu, the waiter brought a basket of fresh bread to the table.

Hot ‘n fresh!  There were mini baguettes, warm Parker rolls, and moist corn sticks.  I did not ignore this basket!  I immediately reached for a corn stick.  It was the perfect cornbread consistency and had some signature Bobby Flay heat to it.  Jalepenos, maybe? The perfect starter!

My brother was especially excited to order steak.  I was especially excited to order…everything else!  I started with a salad.

The asparagus chopped salad was a great choice.  It was full of vegetables, cubes of sharp cheddar cheese, and tomatoes, dressed in a Meyer lemon vinaigrette.  The combination of flavors was pleasant and satisfying.

And it kept getting better!  I couldn’t ignore the fact that my favorite food was on the menu.

I know what you’re thinking.  You went to Bobby Flay’s restaurant and ordered pizza?! If you know me, this will come as no surprise.  I live for pizza…and pizza with caramelized onions, double smoked bacon, and toasted garlic on a crispy grilled crust…I die.  It was that good.  Every bite was robust and full of flavor.  I ate a piece and brought the rest home.  It was just as amazing the next day.  I assure you :) .

Of course my meal was satisfying, but I could not give an establishment an honest review unless I taste-tested their dessert.

We shared an order of the Chocolate Hazelnut Banana Crepes. Each tiny crepe was oozing with chocolatey-hazelnut goodness – think nutella x10!  The dessert was drizzled in a clementine syrup and topped with powdered sugar.  The touch of citrus was the perfect compliment to the rich filling.  A sweet ending!

Bobby Flay is one of my favorite celebrity chefs.  Now I love him even more!  I couldn’t think of a better way to refuel after a challenging 26.2 mile race.  I left with a happy belly and a big smile.  I cannot wait to return!

Who is your favorite celebrity chef?
