Eats and Intervals

I went through yesterday in a daze.  I needed to unwind.  A busy event always requires a day to decompress, take it all in.  That’s what I did.  I spent the day lounging and reading HLS recaps.  Even though I lived it, I love reading all of the different perspectives.  So fun!  For one weekend, I lived the life.  I was surrounded by incredible friends, ate incredible meals, and laughed…a lot! I have memories to last a lifetime.

We ate like royalty! Quaker provided steaming hot oats with all the fixings.

Arnold and Oroweat created a spread full of the freshest salads, sandwiches, and whole grains.

And I always saved room for dessert!

It was glorious!

When I returned home, my fridge and pantry could not compete.  As I recovered from traveling, my eats became a reflection of my mood…starting with a breakfast staple – banana oats – lacking the sparkle of fresh berries.

Lunch was another classic – PB & J with Sun Chips and raw veggies.  Keeping it simple!

And the real showstopper – sweet potato with baked beans and salad for dinner.  Exciting, huh?  It was all I could muster.

Who needs quinoa salad and cookies when you can dine on such gourmet meals at home?! Just kidding!

I woke up today feeling well-rested and ready for reality.  I decided to make up for my boring eats with an exciting workout.  Although it was sad to run alone, I channeled the energy of my Chicago running buddies and busted out some rockin’ intervals!

Check it…

  • 0.25 m @ 6.5 mph (9:13/mi)
  • 0.25 m @ 7.0 mph (8:34/mi)
  • 0.25 m @ 7.5 mph (8:00/mi)
  • 0.25 m @ 8.0 mph (7:30/mi)

I repeated the sequence for 4 miles.  Sweaty beast!  It felt amazing!  For 33 minutes, I kicked it into high gear.  I feel like the weekend renewed my love of running.  I am ready for peak training and all it throws at me!

Who wants to come to RI and run with me?!

Treat Yourself

Saturday was a day of rest.  Rest, I did!  It was glorious.  As much as a crave the endorphin kick of a tough run, I definitely enjoy resting.  Rest is such a key ingredient to training and one I have no trouble incorporating into the plan.  ;)

When I woke up on Saturday morning, I expected soreness, stiffness, and maybe even pain.  I didn’t have any of it!  My body felt just as it does any other day.  I attribute this to a few things:

  • safe buildup of mileage.
  • proper fueling and hydration.
  • getting enough sleep.
  • my ice bath!
  • foam rolling!

What’s your favorite way to recover after a tough workout?

Of course, my recovery included a little more than ice baths and foam rollers.  I added a couple of extra special treats to my day.  First, good reading.

My very own copy of Operation Beautiful!  There were only two books left on the shelf and I snagged one of ‘em.  I’ve already skimmed the book and can’t wait to read more.  I think I’m going to have to wrestle it away from my mom, though.  She’s almost done and loving every page.  As a high school teacher, Mom works with so many young women that could benefit from their own copy.  She already said she’s going to have to put an Operation Beautiful book in her classroom.  It’s seriously good.

After good reading came the good eating.

My Saturday eats meals weren’t anything fancy, but this little devil made up for it – a slice of carrot cake from the very best local bakery.  TO. DIE. FOR!  If I could only eat one dessert forever – imagine being limited to a single dessert?! – carrot cake would be it.  Hands down.  I cherished every sweet, spiced, cream cheesed bite.  Pure decadence.

What is your favorite way to treat yourself?
