I spend one weekend with Emily and Theodora and I’m ready to try a tri.

- Swim. Bike. Run.
I take that back. I’m not at all ready to complete a triathlon…but I want to! If listening to a future Ironman is not motivation, I don’t know what is. Then my aunt asked me if I wanted to do a brick workout with her this morning. Perfect timing! I was psyched.
A brick workout? This refers to training that includes exercise in two disciplines (swim/bike, bike/run, etc.) during the same workout with very little interruption. In triathlon training, brick workouts prepare you for the challenging transitions on race day.
I met my aunt at the gym for our workout. Usually I’m the planner, but I didn’t plan a thing. I let her take the lead and I went in prepared to work. She planned a bike/run brick for us.
The bike.
My aunt reserved a couple of bikes in the early spin class and we were off! The instructor was tough. He made us work – climbing, sprinting, rolling hills. My quads were burning and I thought, “How am I supposed to run after this?!” But 45 minutes and 15 miles later – RUN!
The run.
As soon as the final song ended, we began the transition – spin shoes off, running shoes on. It was time for a 5K. We hit the treadmills. I didn’t know what to expect from my legs, but I was pleasantly surprised. They didn’t feel like bricks at all. In fact, they felt great! Side by side, my aunt and I completed a strong 3.1 miles in 27:40 – 8:55/mi.
That’s my “I’m an awkward gym rat” pose. Gotta celebrate a good thing! This workout was fun, challenging, and super exciting. It felt great to push my body in a different way. And I’m *this close* to registering for a triathlon.
Perhaps, I should train…
Have you ever completed a triathlon?
If you are training for a tri – which one?! I just might come and race it with you.
