Races To Run

July 28, 2011
By

Remember when I registered for the Marine Corps Marathon, then I decided not to run the race?

I am still so happy with my decision and I am definitely having a grand ol’ summer.

Mr.PotatoHeadOnTheRun

But there’s always a race to run!  When I registered for a fall marathon, I started registering for “training races,” too.  I love running races in place of long solo runs because they add fun and excitement to marathon training.  I get to run with hundreds of people on a safe course and I can even earn a medal or a new t-shirt.

I ran a couple of training races while training for the National Marathon and knew I wanted to take advantage of the local summer races during my next training cycle.

I excitedly registered for The Blessing of the Fleet (a 10 mile road race) and the Providence Rock ‘N Roll Half Marathon. They fit perfectly into my training plan.

Then my training plan vanished…

And I am still registered for those races!  In fact, I will run The Blessing of the Fleet tomorrow. TOMORROW!

I’m a little nervous about running ten miles.  I haven’t trained for double-digit distances recently and I know it will be a challenge, so I am preparing BeckOnTheRun style.

Eat carbs.  Let’s face it, that’s the best part of racing!

Choose a flashy outfit.  Okay, we might have a tie.  Flashy running clothes are just as exciting as carbs.

Make plans to reunite with a running buddy.  Lolly and I have run countless miles together, but never during a race.  This will be fun!

Back in the day!

We have no time goals.  We plan to enjoy the atmosphere, run smart, and have fun.  Oh…and make the {ontherun} team proud!

The race starts at 6 PM.  Ready, set, GO!

Do you run “just for fun” races? The Blessing of the Fleet is the biggest RI road race and the #1 10 Mile Race in New England.  All local runners come out for the event.  I can’t miss it!

My Seven Links

July 26, 2011
By

For the past couple weeks, a blog series called “Seven Links” has swirled around the internet.  Theodora tagged me to participate in the series on Friday, but I was preparing to climb a mountain.  Now it’s time to get in on the fun!

First, the rules:

THE GOAL

To unite bloggers (from all sectors) in a joint endeavor to share lessons learned and create a bank of long but not forgotten blog posts that deserve to see the light of day again.

THE RULES

1)     Blogger is nominated to take part.

2)     Blogger publishes his/her 7 links on his/her blog – 1 link for each category.

3)     Blogger nominates up to 5 more bloggers to take part.

4)     These bloggers publish their 7 links and nominate another 5 more bloggers.

5)    And so it goes on!

6)    They’ll be sharing the best posts from participating bloggers on our blog and everyday on Facebook and Twitter at #My7Links

***

There are over 500 posts in the BeckOnTheRun archives, so it should be rather easy to find a link to fit each of the given categories.  Er…not so much!  It took some serious digging…here goes!

Most Beautiful

If you find sarcastic, random ramblings beautiful, then you’re in the right place!  There’s also so many photos of particularly lovely desserts on this blog; however, selecting a post with a beautiful message was slightly more difficult.

Of all the posts I’ve written, my recent post - A Long Time Comingstands out in my mind.  In that post, I shared a very personal part of my life and opened the door to new opportunities and different adventures.

Most Popular

The posts that generate the most interest on the blog usually involve races.  I know I am supposed to narrow this down to seven links, but I don’t do well with rules.  Instead, here are my most popular race recaps!

Most Controversial

You could call me the Switzerland of the blog world.  I enjoy ramblings, running, and lighthearted topics, so I rarely address controversial issues in this forum.  I honestly cannot find a post that has generated much controversy.  Do you remember a controversial BeckOnTheRun post? Remind me, please!

Most Helpful

Mostly, I share my experiences through this blog.  I started blogging because I found it interesting to read blogs about the real lives of real people.  Hearing the stories of others has always been helpful in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and I hope the my stories can do the same for my readers – or at least give you a chuckle sometimes!

In January, I wrote a post  - The More The Merrierabout joining a gym for the first time.  It’s a daunting thing for someone battling insecurities surrounding their weight and fitness.  Many people seemed to relate to this story and I hope by sharing it, someone was able to overcome their own fears.

Surprise Success

I always assume that people come here to read about running.  The excitement really builds when I’m training for a race, so I was suprised (pleasantly!) when I received overwhelming support for my decision to defer my fall marathon registration.

While I love distance running, I knew it was time to scale back and change things up a bit.  I worried that my decision would not be well-received, but I knew it was right for me.  I’m so happy that you are sticking around during changing times.

Okay, some things never change.

Not Enough Attention

Every time I see that someone has read and commented on something I’ve written, I’m absolutely delighted.  I love writing posts and truly appreciate anyone taking the time to read and provide feedback.  I searched and searched through my archives, but I could not select a post that deserved more attention.  I just hope that each time I link to other amazing bloggers (Lauren, Lizzy, Corey, Ali, Theodora, Emily…and the list goes on), you click over to show them the same love you show me.  They are women with incredible stories!

Most Proud

There are few moments that compare to crossing the finish line of my first marathon.  My instinct was to choose that post for this category; however, something even more memorable happened on May 1, 2011.  My mom and I completed a half marathon (her first!) hand-in-hand.  We didn’t make a plan to run the race together, but some things are just meant to be.  I was so proud of her accomplishment and thrilled to share in the experience with her.

According to the rules, it’s my turn to pass this on to five other bloggers.  Many of the bloggers I know have already participated in the Seven Links series (and I’m terrible with rules!) so I will simply ask everyone to share a link to their most memorable post in the comments section.  I can’t wait to read them all!
