This week I’ve had the chance to test my sea legs a couple of times. No, no…I didn’t go boating or anything. I just ran along the sea! It’s been fun to explore the coast on foot with my cousin by my side. It’s been a long time since I’ve run with a buddy…I missed it! My cousin is training for her upcoming cross-country season. For the first time, she is running some longer distances. This morning, I welcomed her to my favorite place – double-digit land! We juggled our running schedules a bit this week, so we could do our runs together. I rested up yesterday and prepared for today’s long run.
My sweet cousin has adjusted nicely to my early bird routine. We got up and ate a light breakfast – whole wheat English muffin with PB&J – before running.
With fuel in our bellies, we strapped on the Camelbaks and set off for a lovely ten miler.
Total Distance: 10.0 miles
- Mile 1 – 8:57/mi
- Mile 2 – 8:44/mi
- Mile 3 – 8:51/mi
- Mile 4 – 9:00/mi
- Mile 5 – 8:57/mi
- Mile 6 – 8:52/mi
- Mile 7 – 9:07/mi
- Mile 8 – 8:49/mi
- Mile 9 – 8:56/mi
- Mile 10 – 9:02/mi
Total Time: 1:29:19
Average Pace: 8:55/mi
So fun! We ran a really nice route and felt great. My cousin set a personal distance record and I got to experience it with her. She is destined for a great running career! Someday we will race together…which reminds me…the roads I ran this week are part of the route for my upcoming race – The Blessing of the Fleet 10 Miler. It’s a night race with lots of spirit. They already have signs lining the streets of Narragansett. With each training run, I got more excited to race!
There will be no racing without proper refueling…
There’s nothing like a cold, creamy yogurt mess on a hot summer day! I’m trying to eat hearty meals after long runs. Otherwise, my appetite is all wacky the next day.
- 1 container plain Oikos
- 1/2 c. Kashi GoLean
- 1/2 c. Kashi Heart to Heat
- 1 sliced banana
- 1/2 c. blueberries
- 2 T. mixed nuts

It’s my last night at the beach…time to soak up the last few hours of sun and sand. I’ve loved every minute of this week. I’m proud to call Rhode Island home.
What is your home state? What do you love most about it? Rhode Island is small, but it’s full of great places. We have quick, easy access to major cities and country living.

You are really inspiring me to get out there and get running on the street. I’ve been avoiding it lately! Ten miles is something to be proud of!
Great 10 miler! Tomorrow is my 1st double digit run since May….yikes!
Home state is your neighbor, MA! I’ve lived here since 1983 and so I do consider it home even though I’ve lived in 2 other states. I love the area for its history and vacinity to the beaches or mountains…it has something for everyone!
Glad you had a fun run! I live in NC and I love it because we have beaches, mountains, and awesome weather! Well, except for this humidity =P
Sounds like an amazing run. I love running by the water. Congrats to your cousin on her first 10-miler!!
As you know, I’m living in RI, but it’s not really my home state. I actually don’t really feel like I have one. I know that sounds weird, but I’ve moved around a lot and so it’s always hard for me to tell people where I’m originally from. It’s only been relatively recently that I’ve started feeling settled in RI. I do love this little state though.
My home is not a state, but a province as I’m Canadian
It’s called British Columbia and it is absolutely wonderful. Out of all of Canada’s provinces it has the most mild weather – not too cold winters and not too hot summers. Also, the scenery is amazing. Canada is vast and full of natural resources, and British Columbia is simply a microcosm of it. It’s got big, beautiful trees and mountains for days. Also, it’s on the Pacific ocean, so it’s got a bit of everything
